100 Million years ago What really happened?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sevier_orogeny
That is NOT what happened. If it was, the pressure would have been from west to east, but it was from northeast to southwest! What did happen was the unthinkable. Earth was hit by a comet. All the clues are there to prove it. The comet contained many asteroids and a lot of gold dust especially in the tail.
So it was not a normal impact hit. It came a very low angle, about 1 degree. It did not explode, instead, it started carving a trench, like the Great Dyke of Zimbabwe.
Traveling faster than 20 miles per second, It penetrated 100 miles of atmosphere in less than 5 seconds, so it didn't warm up much, but was pushing a large column of air before it. it made first contact in the Beaufort Sea, and pushed water from there into Canada. So the Sevier Orogeny began with a large wave of water arriving on land at around 20 miles per second hitting the rocks and pushing them toward the southeast, this began the thin skinned thrusting, Finally the comet made contact and left it's DNA on Canadian soil, vanadium, uranium ans gold.
It carved a trench from Canada thru Mexico, and broke the continent in half, the east side thrust down several miles. The Beaufort sea rushed in, creating the Western Intercontinental Sea. The comet continued on, depositing Copper, silver and god in Arizona and new Mexico, ending with the Sierra Madres. Then the Laramide Orogeny began, pushing the west side of the trench on top of the east side, creating the rocky Mountains. The Next important thing that happened was the asteroid that hit the Yucatan allowed the release Of the Rocky Mountains.

This orogeny was caused by the subduction of the oceanic Farallon Plate underneath the continental North American Plate. Crustal thickening that led to mountain building was caused by a combination of compressive forces and conductive heating initiated by subduction, which led to deformation.[4] The Sevier River area of central Utah is the namesake of this event.

Remember comets are mostly dirty snow balls.
