A thousand years ago the Family shield was just a simple design on the battle shield to distinguish foes from friends. It wasn't until the 1700's that the patterns became bragging points in Family crests with flourishes and motto's. Our first family shield was a simple gold cross on a red shield.
many years later, the family members who had gone into southwestern Scotland where "Cross" was pronounced "Corse" reversed the colors and carried a gold shield with a red cross. They were known as "the Corsbys."
Over the years I have collected a few more Crosby Crests. Here is the one used by the Lord Mayor of London.
Venus H. Crosby.
1630 - Crosbie, Bishop of Ardfert.
Crosby the Eighth Bart.
The Crest of Sir Andrew Crosby of Holm, Famous lawyer in Edenburg who lost all in a banking scheme and vowed to return.
The shield accepted by Maxine Nation's side of the family.
