My Tanach is the JPS 1999 version with Hebrew and English. It is heralded as the most accurate. From the publisher:
The Hebrew text of this TANAKH is based on the famed Leningrad Codex, the Masoretic text traceable to Aaron ben Moses ben Asher, ca. 930 CE. Ben-Asher researched all available texts to compile an authoritative Bible manuscript. In 1010 CE his work was revised by Samuel ben Jacob, a scribe in Egypt. Lost for centuries, the manuscript was eventually discovered in the mid-nineteenth century and became known as the Leningrad Codex.
...
This edition also includes an informative preface that discusses the history of Bible translation, focusing on the latest JPS English translation of the Holy Scriptures. It is the result of a 30-year interdenominational collaboration of eminent Jewish Bible scholars.
This is what is written (with punctuation):
Genesis
When God began to create heaven and earth --- the earth being unformed and void, with darkness over the surface of the deep and a wind from God sweeping over the water ---
Thanks Tela, I like that version!
God gave us TWO accounts of the creation of the earth - a very brief one in Genesis, and an extensive one in the layers of earth itself.
For me the story goes something like this:
Genesis
When God began to create heaven and earth --- the earth being unformed and void, with darkness over the surface of the deep and a wind from God sweeping over the water ---
God was surveying all his creations and processes that He had set in motion and found one area that looked especially promising for his next project.
In a nebula where a bunch of new stars were forming was an area thick with the elements necessary for life and low in toxic elements.
His Laws were busily pulling together a promising proto star surrounded by proto planets. The third planet out would be prime property, right in the center of the Goldilocks zone for life.
After brooding briefly, He started special processes in action to assure Earth would turn out just as He wished.
There has evidently been a change in our solar atmosphere as earth was forming. Radioactive elements came first to keep us from freezing, then slowed way down. The amount of magnesium was high, then dropped significantly. The amounts of aluminum, sodium and potassium, has increased for the surface material, and has continued to the present.
From time to time he sends a comet our way to give us special elements like copper, vanadium, gold, silver, uranium, etc.
He turned on the sun and as the earth rotated, it experienced it's first day and night.
It wasn't the first day and night for the whole universe as I once thought.
