Geologists do not understand Comet impacts. Comets are dirty snowballs, mostly water ice. The bigger they are, the longer it takes to thaw. Say there was a comet 300 miles in diameter traveling in earth orbit. Earth moves around 18 miles per second, so it would be going about that same speed. It would warm up a little going through the atmosphere, but not enough to melt it clear through.
