Remembering the courage of our heroes
On April 9, 1942, three months after the Bataan of Bataan in the Philippines during World War II; Filipino and American prisoners of war were forcibly transferred by the Imperial Japanese Army from Mariveles, Bataan to Camp O’Donnell in Tarlac. They marched approximately 60 miles under extreme heat, with no provisions for food, water, shelter or medicine. Along the way, those who could no longer go on were beaten, bayoneted, shot or beheaded by their Japanese captors. Approximately 10,000 Filipino and 650 American soldiers died during the march.

Johnny reluctantly told us some of what happened. They were forced to take off their shoes and marched over coral that sliced up their feet. Anyone who fell was shot. The largest man in their group was endlessly tormented until he could take no more. He grabbed the nearest Jap by the feet and used him as a club to beat four others to death. Their group was lined up and every third man was shot.
Many more stories like the young Filipino who tried to sneak food to them. He was captured and tossed into the pit latrine. When he tried to crawl out he was bayoneted in the stomach and left to die in the pit.
They raped the Filipino women and when it came time for them to deliver, they tied their legs together and laughed at their pain.
War is Hell!
