@edmost roused my curiosity about the curious "hanging Tongue" caves of the Papago Buttes in downtown phoenix. My shortest route takes me through Fredonia and Marble Canyon AZ on US 89A. - Why THIS section of road? It looks like it could have been so much shorter. More money for the road building company? Avoiding expensive construction? Avoiding dangerous ground? A few more views:

89A is a really beautiful road, I've driven it a few times. I decided to come home on this from Page, AZ and got caught in snowstorm, we were the last vehicle to Jacob Lake before the road was closed. This is the route to the North Rim of the Gran Canyon, too.

We just did our second visit to the South Rim a little over one week ago. Wife wants to go to the North Rim. How do you like it there? I prefer the North Rim, less crowded. I haven't stayed at the SR in years but did stay at the NR a few years back, one of the cabins. I've never hiked into the canyon, not in shape to do it now. We have done all the viewpoints and hiked one rim trail a few years back. If you have a good SUV/Jeep consider Toroweap, simply amazing. Very remote, nothing like looking 3000 ft straight down! The white water is Lava Falls, the roughest streatch in the GC, with binoculars you can watch rafts:
