Contrary to modern genealogical opinion, I believe in the beginning there is only one Crosby Family. Surnames were coined in Normandy France shortly after 900 AD with Rollo and his followers after they were baptized into the Catholic Church in 912, so OUR FAMILY WAS THE FIRST IN THE WORLD TO HAVE THE CROSBY SURNAME! How many Crosbys are there in the world? The following is a first attempt at answering that question. World Population growth is regulated by attitude, climate, food supply, WAR, etc. Here is a doubling chart. Assuming the NEW SURNAME being coined shortly after 900 AD by a Husband, wife, and Four Children = 6 individuals; how fast could their population grow? My guess is around the world average of doubling every 40 years, A generation is about 20 years. In 1040 - (about the 7th generation) - with Sir John de Crosebi there could have been as many as 64 living Crosbis. In 1600 (35th Generation) with Simon the Immigrant, over a million, and in 1800 (45th Generation) when Brass Crosby was Lord Mayor, over 33 million.

We began as "Norsemen" following Rollo in his raids on Briton and France and were baptized into the Catholic church with him in 912. This was the beginning of SURNAMES and our ancestor took "de Crosbj" as his (the alphabet was still being invented and i and j were still interchangeable). There is no sign of anyone else taking that surname.
It is likely that the FIRST CROSBY to arrive in Briton (somewhere between the first and seventh generation) did so shortly after 912, following the Norsemen that conquered Yorkshire around 800 AD. His family was established in Yorkshire.
It is possible that instead, two Crosby families crossed with William, the other perhaps an older brother to John. The odds are that his name was Sir Odo de Crosbi, that he died before 1086 and his son, Odo, is mentioned in the Doomdday book in York, with Odo de Crosbi being a vassil of Ivo Talbois.
Our Sir John de Crosbi was born around 1040 (the 1040 tax form makes it painfully easy to remember). On average there are 20 years between generations. 140 years between the first de Crosbj and sir John give us around seven generations of Crosbi's unaccounted for.
90 miles north to establish the little village of Crosby just north of Maryport.

Crosby Family Migrations from Picardi France to 2. Lincolnshire before 1000, then Yorkshire and eventually London: 3. Mersey and Lancashire after 1066, 4. Cumberland perhaps 1080; 5. Annandale - Dumfries perhaps 1090; 6. Berwick perhaps 1100; 7. Isle of Man, and 8. Ireland
